South Florida Bicycle Accidents

Cycling Accidents and Injuries

It is estimated that more than 57 million Americans ride bikes. Bicycles are no longer just for kids. They are regularly used for transportation, travel, work, fun, exercise and even sports (cycling, tri-althons, etc.).

Both drivers and cyclists must obey the law. At a minimum drivers of motor vehicles need to share theiStock 000007895741Small road with bicyclists and must be courteous—allow at least three feet clearance when passing a bicyclist on the road. Cyclists are considered vehicle operators and are therefore required to obey the same rules of the road as other vehicle operators, including obeying traffic signs, signals, and lane markings.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Safety Administration, in 2011, there were 677 cyclists killed and 48,000 seriously injured in traffic accidents. This accounts for 2% of all people injured in traffic accidents. Injuries often include bruises and road rash to catastrophic brain injuries, neck injuries, spinal cord paralysis, broken and dislocated shoulders, hips and limbs to even death.

The attorneys at Farmer Jaffe Weissing handle many different types of bicycle accident cases including when:

  • A driver turning directly in front of a bicyclist
  • A driver entering the street from a driveway or parking space pulls out into traffic in front of the bicyclist
  • A driver fails to yield at an intersection
  • A driver fails to stop at a stop sign or red stop light
  • A driver’s inattention or distraction (cell phone, texting) while driving past a bicyclist
  • A driver fails to look both ways when resuming travel after stopping at a stop sign
  • A driver who opens a door and knocks a bicyclist over
  • A driver impaired by drugs or alcohol
  • A driver of a government or municipal vehicle and bus hits a bicyclist

Additional causes for a bicycle accident include defective equipment and accessories (handlebars, pedals or helmets) and even road construction, unsafe roadways, sidewalks, overgrown vegetation and unsafe premises.
