What is PRADAXA or DABIGATRAN?

pradaxacases.com1-resized-600PRADAXA is DABIGATRAN ETEXILATE and referred to as DABIGATRAN or “DABI” for short. It is an anti-coagulant, or blood thinner, manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim that was approved for use in the United States, by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010. It was celebrated as a “new” blood thinner and marketed as a convenient way to replace WARFARIN or COUMADIN. WARFARIN and COUMADIN have been available for over 50 years. However, they require routine monitoring and dietary restrictions that some patients find to be an inconvenience.

PRADAXA (DABIGATRAN) is prescribed to help prevent blood clots in patients with Atrial Fibrillation or (AFib). AFit is a condition where the upper chambers of the heart may have an irregular heart beat which could lead to the creation of blood clots that can increase the risk of adverse events including strokes of heart attacks. It is often used as a replacement to blood thinners COUMADIN or WARFARIN. However, since having been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010, PRADAXA has been linked to at least 542 deaths in the United States resulting in lawsuits over PRADAXA CASES. Other side effects included internal bleeding, ulcers, cerebral hemorrhage, and life-threatening bleeding.

The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), which works with the FDA released its eye opening report “QuarterWatch, Monitoring FDA MedWatch Reports” on May 31, 2012, which revealed that PRADAXA was:

  • associated with 3,781 serious adverse event reports
  • outpaced all regularly monitored drugs in reports of hemorrhage with 2,367 cases reported
  • linked to 644 cases of strokes
  • linked to 542 patient deaths
  • linked to 291 cases of acute renal failure
  • suspected in 15 cases of liver failure
