Farmer, Jaffe, Weissing, Edwards, Fistos & Lehrman attorney Adam Horowitz announces the filing in Palm Beach County Circuit Court (Case No. 2014CA009305) of a second sexual battery lawsuit filed against Dr. Manuel Abreu and his former medical practice, Personal Physician Care, P.A.
As reported in today’s Palm Beach Post, the latest lawsuit was filed by a former medical assistant at Personal Physician Care. The medical assistant claims Dr. Abreu groped her vaginal area in an examination room in 2012. According to the lawsuit, the medical assistant reported her assault in approximately June 2012 to the medical practice administrators, who elected to retain Dr. Abreu. Personal Physcian Care did not discharge Dr. Manuel Abreu from the medical practice on Linton Boulevard until after Dr. Abreu and Personal Physician Care received the first lawsuit in June 2014. In that lawsuit, patient Dawn Marie Basham claims Abreu touched her inappropriately after he removed a cyst from her leg. Prior to working at Personal Physician Care, Dr. Manuel Abreu worked as a physician at All Care Medical Consultants in Clearwater and St. Petersburg, Florida. It is alleged in the recent lawsuit that Personal Physician Care knew or should have known, even before hiring Dr. Abreu, that he was terminated from his prior employment where he was known to engage in sexual misconduct and inappropriate relations with persons whom he met through his duties as a physician. According to the lawsuits, Dr. Abreu also sexually assaulted other medical assistant and a pharmaceutical sales representative while he was employed at Personal Physician Care.
If you have been a victim of any sexual misconduct by Dr. Manuel Abreu or have any information about such an incident, it is urgent that you contact law enforcement in the city where the incident occurred and also report the incident to the Florida Department of Health. As in the cases of clergy sexual abuse, we often see in these physician sexual misconduct case that there is rarely just one victim and perpetrators become emboldened when they “get away with” committing sexual misconduct without any negative consequence. By speaking up and report your assault, you are not only standing up for yourself and protecting future victims from the same harm, but you are also giving other potential victims the strength to come forward.
