Credit Reporting Problems

The accuracy and clarity of credit reports are vital to consumers because frequently credit worthiness, insurability, and employment decisions are based, in large part, on these reports.  Inaccurate or unclear information may make credit unavailable to consumers or available on unfavorable terms or may cause consumers numerous other headaches—namely, higher interest rates and higher lease payments; rejection by a potential employer; or rejection of a consumer’s insurance application or an offer of insurance at a higher price or premium.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act ("FCRA") is a federal law that governs the content of consumer credit reports and the manner by which inaccurate and unclear information contained in reports must be removed. The FCRA provides other valuable protections for consumers, too.
